Joke: Rich and Poor

A rich and a poor man are buying a gift for their wives for their birthdays.

The rich man says: I'm gonna buy a brand new BMW and a diamond ring. That way if she doesn't like the ring, she can take it back in her BMW and she'd still be happy.

The poor man says: I've got my wife a pair of slippers and a dildo. That way if she doesn't like her slippers, she can go fuck herself.

Torrents

After a tweet from @DavidBlue saying if you want to befriend him, do not watch SGU from torrents, i started to think. I can certainly see it from his point of view. Especially for the writers who do not earn anything from this.
But let's see this from another point of view, mainly mine.

Yes i do download torrents from TV series to watch the latest episodes.
No i do not download movies though.
First i'm going to give the reason why i download torrents from TV shows to watch.

I'm living in the Netherlands. Some probably know whereabouts that is. It's a small country in the west of Europe. Now in this country we do have several TV networks that broadcast several things, and also tv series.
The thing is with these networks, and i have certainly complained at them as well...
They often buy TV series from the USA and say that it's a big hit there.
The beauty is, i do check tv series online on http://www.epguides.com/current
On that website you can see all the current TV shows of this season, including which series got cancelled in which year etc. etc.
Often the series that The Netherlands buys from the USA are those that were cancelled after aprox. 13 episodes or first season.

Few examples: Threshold, Knightrider (2008), Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles (oh yeah, hit from the US according to a Dutch TV network, but this was said after it was cancelled)

In the event they do buy a TV show that had good ratings and last several years, they really have no respect in how they air these.

Let me give you an example:

Stargate SG1: They started broadcasting this series around 1999 in my country. I already knew about this show because I visited the UK a year prior to that and i rented the TV pilot.
They aired the first two seasons and stopped with this. Three years later they started to broadcast again, starting at season one and didn't go much further than season three.

Another 2 years passed and they decided to broadcast these again, back to back. They never went beyond Season 6 or 7 to my best of knowledge. This show has a total of 10 seasons by the way. They did however broadcast Stargate: Atlantis as well, but to my best of knowledge, only one season before they stopped showing this as well. This series had a total of 5 seasons.

Smallville is the same. They have tried to air it several times over the years, but they never went past Season 6. Currently they are airing Season 9 in the USA.

Heroes had perhaps 2 seasons aired in The Netherlands. I caught an episode again a few nights back and it was Season 1 again. (Currently Season 4 being aired in the USA)

There are several other series i could possibly name that have had this.
Ofcourse i cannot say that The Netherlands is behind with every show. Certainly Lost seems to be on track, as well as House M.D. and most of the tv series for the female demographic like 90210 and Melrose Place.

If and when The Netherlands would buy new TV shows and respect them enough, i would stop watching those shows that were downloaded by torrent. But alas, until then...

One good thing comes out of it though.
I do not share, and once these episodes have been watched, i remove them from my harddrive again.

Also if i do think a series is good, i will buy them on DVD anyways.
But perhaps it would be more fruitfull for television networks from all over the world to share their feed with other countries. Let the Dutch watch all TV networks from the US, and vice versa. Same goes for the UK and Australia for instance. I think if this was done, you would eliminate torrents immediately. Noone cared for them anymore as they would simply tape their favorite programs.

Until that would happen, which i believe would never happen, i'm glad torrentsites exist. Although they're heavily abused for illegal spreading of movies and software etc, i also think they can be used for good.
Perhaps these should be made in such way that once you've seen an episode that was downloaded, it would automaticly be removed from the harddisk.

On another note. I read the other day a blog of another person, which profession is in internet laws. He also looked at torrent sites and those that provide tv series in a legal way.
I did the same thing by going to several sites of where tv shows could be downloaded legally for a small amount of money.

All the series were pretty much Dutch shows only, and if there was an american show on there, it weren't even all seasons, maybe the first 2 at the most.
